Working in Healthcare in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough and looking to undertake Oliver McGowan training?
is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social carestaff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that CQC-registered providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability andautism training appropriate to their role.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the preferred and recommended training for health and social carestaff. Oliver’s Training also supports the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan ambition by upskilling the wider health and care workforce to provide appropriately adjusted care for peoplewith a learning disability and autistic people to reduce health inequality.

The LeDeR programme, funded by NHS England, started in 2017 and aims to improve healthcare for people with a learning disability and autistic people. Each year, Integrated Care Systems produce a report on autistic people or people with a learning disability who have died, to review areas of good practice and areas for improvement in healthcare.
Please note, these reports contain information and statistics that people may find upsetting to read.
Hospital passports, or Health and Care Passports are documents that is used by medical professionals, like doctors, nurses or ambulance staff, and summarises a person’s needs, likes and dislikes. This is filled in by the person it is about (or by the person’s responsible adult) and is kept with the person so it can be taken to any appointment.
There is not a standard Passport template. Depending on your location, you may find lots of different templates online. Here are a few types of these passports:
This is a template made by CUH for people with learning disabilities. If a person attends Addenbrookes Hospital or other CUH places, they may be familiar with this template.
This is a template made by NWAFT for people with learning disabilities, autism, or both. If a person attends a hospital in Peterborough, Hinchingbrooke or Stamford and Rutland, they may be familiar with this template. Guidance on using this passport can be found on their website.
This is a template made by the National Autistic Society. Guidance on using this Passport can be found on their website.
